Reward Two Back Study

Description:

The focus of this study is to explore the cognitive effects of positive and negative reinforcement. This study utilizes a Two-back Continuous Performance Task with auditory feedback and reward/punishment, where subjects have to indicate, with button presses, if the current letter presented on the screen is the same as the letter presented two letters earlier. If the subject answered correctly in the given amount of time, then a positive ('correct') feedback tone was delivered and 1 point was added to the subject's total points ($ in their pocket). If the subject answered incorrectly in the given amount of time, then a negative ('wrong') feedback tone was delivered and 1 point was subtracted from the subject's total points ($ out of their pocket). For about 20% of the correct trials and 30% of the incorrect trials, a bonus or penalty tone was delivered instead of the standard tone to indicate that the points added or subtracted from the total points would be 2 and not 1, effectively signaling a 'bonus' or 'penalty' consequence for that trial. To control for the fact that these tones would not only signal enhanced subjective importance but also would be relatively rare (creating an 'oddball' effect), an equally rare, but reinforcement neutral tone was delivered for 6% of the total trials.

2 'non-match' response press the left button on the response pad to indicate that the letter currently on the screen is different from the letter they saw two presentations prior Response/Button press
20 neutral correct on a correct response a neutral tone was delivered that did not convey any information about whether the answer was correct or not, but they gained 1 point Stimulus/Auditory/Tone, Stimulus/Oddball/0.06, Stimulus/Feedback/Reward/$1
25 neutral wrong on a wrong response a neutral tone was delivered that did not convey any information about whether the answer was correct or not, but they lost 1 point Stimulus/Auditory/Tone, Stimulus/Oddball/0.06, Stimulus/Feedback/Penalty/$1
